Chee’ilth Marvel Character
A Coast Salish Superhero
Through and Through.
We worked with the team at Kabam Games and the Cultural Experts at the Squamish Lil’wat Culture Centre to bring the first truly Coast Salish Superhero to Marvel Contest of Champions. Our job was to create memorable tattoo designs that would represent the two Guardian Spirits that give Chee’ilth her power. We would also go on to create a Coast Salish design to be put on to the spirits to show their supernatural strength. The weapon that Chee’ilth uses is an axe that has a traditional carving adze on the back of it. The Axe has Salish Eyes carved into the hilt, which are a symbol of ones ancestors watching over them.
About Chee’ilth
When a nearby experimental gamma reactor went into meltdown, Gail Williams made the impossible choice to dive into the flaming wreckage and save her abusive foster father. In doing so, she showed her compassion, courage and fortitude and became the champion of two Divine Spirits, Brother Grizzly and Sister Eagle. The two spirits bestowed upon her their might, knowledge and healing gifts. Now she works to save those in need, even the gamma mutates cursed by The One Below All, as the hero Chee’ilth!
