Kalkalilh
Banff Centre Artist Residency
“The digital realm, be it in movies, shows, or video games, represents this ethereal space where anything is possible.”
Digital artist Austin Aan’yas Harry joined us over the Fall for our Indigenous Arts program, Akunumusǂitis: Ecological Engagement Through The Seasons. Through 3D animation and sculpture, he sought to bring to life a Coast Salish cautionary tale from his childhood centred around Kalkalilh, a “scary old woman who eats the toes of children as if they were grapes!”
“Using the Banff Centre’s 3D printing facilities, I have bridged the gap between digital art and sculpture, Coast Salish and character design, and the Supernatural with the Natural World.”
Austin hopes to evolve this work into a cohesive world with traditional Indigenous legends at the forefront.
“There is a rich tapestry filled with untapped narratives, and I can’t wait to explore them respectfully in my style of creation.”
